Since 2007, the Redondo Public Libraries have implemented the Teen Advisory Council (TAC) to bring teenagers together to help them gain a voice in the library system. It’s part of a movement among libraries across the country in recent years to encourage teenagers to make a difference and add fresh ideas to their local system.
The purpose of TAC is to involve middle and high school students in the development, promotion and implementation of teen activities and services at the Redondo Public Library. Members should have a strong interest in helping behind the scenes to enhance library services to teens and in promoting awareness of teen activities in the library.
Meetings are the first Tuesday of the month from 3:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m. as well as some additional volunteer hours.
“We see many of the same teens come back year after year,” said Cheney Brannigan, the program and outreach librarian. “It gives them a chance to socialize with other teens they might not otherwise hang out with during school.”
They meet together to plan activities specifically catered to teens and talk to them about what books, magazines, music and DVDs they would like to see in the library.
“I’ve seen teens that have joined TAC start out very timid and quiet, who quickly learn to express themselves and their ideas with others in a safe environment,” said Cheney.
“They also learn that they act as representatives of their teen community and take it seriously as we discuss what teens want and need in their library. They enjoy being able to have a voice, and they learn how to make democracy work for them.”
