Teamwork has been the winning ingredient for Redondo’s girls cross country team this season, keeping all but one runner from surpassing its pack in the first of two Bay League meets.

Mira Costa’s Savannah Pio topped the field with a time of 19 minutes, 54 seconds but her teammates couldn’t get past the Sea Hawks who finished in the second through sixth spots at the end of the three-mile course.
Rachel Bush (19:59), Cara Ulizio (20:03), Laura O’Neill (20:18), Kelly Ryan (20:29) and Kayla Ferron (20:33) led Redondo to the victory with 20 points ahead of Mira Costa (40), West (90), Palos Verdes (95) and Peninsula (106). Anique Villegas finished 16th for the Sea Hawks with a time of 21:52.
Redondo is ranked second in the CIF Division 2 poll while Mira Costa holds the fifth spot. Palos Verdes and West are ranked first and sixth, respectively, in Division 3.
Costa finished in a pack of its own with Kelli Sugimoto finishing eighth (20:38), Aryn Foland ninth (20:53), Vivien Cherrette tenth (20:59) and Jenna Tong eleventh (21:06). Also finishing for the Mustangs were Shannon Hagedorn (15th, 21:50) and Yvette Sandoval (26th, 23:01).
The Lady Sea Hawks continued their dominance last Saturday when Bob Leech’s team captured the Jim Danne Championship at the NIKE Pre-Nationals in Portland, OR.
Palos Verdes captured the boys competition with Justin Unno (17:20) edging Redondo’s Tyler Caracoza (17:24) and Mira Costa’s Adam Perez (17:25). Ranked No. 1 in Division 3, Palos Verdes had 41 points to finish ahead of Redondo (62), Peninsula (65), West (75) and Mira Costa (101).
Evan Malone (17:28) placed fifth for Redondo while teammate Patrick Borgerding finished tenth with a mark of 17:59. Also finishing for the Sea Hawks were Garrett Klatte (19th, 18:18), Nick Herold (26th, 18:41), Alex Guzman (27th, 18:46) and Dezhan Bland (28th, 18:53).
Other Mira Costa runners included Travis Taylor (13th, 18:05), Sammy Nunan (22nd, 18:36), Zachary Adler (29th, 18:53), Pablo Diaz (31st, 19:03), Ryan Ascencio (32nd, 19:33) and Brett Douville (33rd, 19:44).
Redondo proved its Bay League victory was no fluke when the Sea Hawks captured the Jim Danne Championship last Saturday at the NIKE Pre-Nationals in Portland, OR. With five of the top 15 finishers, Redondo scored outscored second-place Trabuco Hills 43-147, led by Ferron (5th, 18:44.74), Mull (6th, 18:45.16) and O’Neill (10th, 18:54.43).
Bush finished 13th at 19:05.72, just ahead of teammates Ryan (14th, 19:06.47) and Ulizio (17th, 19:13.77) while Villegas placed 58th with a time of 19:13.77. ER
