Redondo earns bye in first round of girls volleyball playoffs

After winning the Bay League title last week with its 27th consecutive victory, the top-ranked Redondo’s girls volleyball team received a bye in Tuesday’s opening round of the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 1-AA Championships presented by Farmers.

The Sea Hawks (32-3) will host the winner of the Newport Harbor-Marlborough match on Thursday. All matches excluding the finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Bay League runner-up Mira Costa (18-11) is ranked tenth in Division 1-AA and will host Mission Viejo (17-10) in the first round on Tuesday while Peninsula (17-8) travels to take on Sunset League runner-up Huntington Beach (16-13).

In Division 1-A, Bishop Montgomery (19-13) plays at Estancia (12-8) on Tuesday.

North Torrance (22-5) and South Torrance (22-10) earned the top two seeds, respectively, in Division 2AA. North will host West Covina (10-16) while South hosts Bonita (10-14). The Pioneer League’s third representative, El Segundo (11-15), plays at San Luis Obispo (23-5).

Chadwick (24-2) earned the second seed in Division 2-A and will host the Village Christian-Western wild-card winner in the first round on Tuesday.

El Segundo-based Vistamar (16-8) is ranked ninth in Division 4-A and will host Desert Christian Academy (11-8).

Second round action takes place Thursday followed by the quarterfinals on Saturday and the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Championship matches take place Saturday, Nov. 17 at Santiago Canyon College.
