The historic Fraternal Order of Eagles lodge on Catalina Avenue may soon become an organic restaurant and community meeting facility, according to listing agent Dean Thomas of Keller Williams Real Estate.

Thomas said the Eagles have accepted an offer near to the $2.9 million asking price for the 16,413 square-foot building from a national non profit organization.

The buyer, who has asked not to be identified until the sale closes, plans to make $1 million in improvements in the historically designated art deco landmark, Thomas said.

Lodge leaders chose the non profit over competing offers because the non profit promises to carry on the lodge’s tradition of public service, Thomas said.

The Eagle motto is “People helping people.” It routinely raises funds for local charities, including Cheer for Children and the Max Baer Heart Fund at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

The lodge was built in 1948 at a reported cost of $25,000. Downstairs is a large bar and a game room with pool tables and a 22-foot long shuffleboard table. Upstairs is a 6,000 square foot ballroom.

Last December the Redondo Aerie (eagle’s nest) celebrated its 106th anniversary with a lasagna dinner and Karaoke.

Eagle trustee Terry Stottler said members decided to sell the facility because membership has declined from a high of 1,400 in the 1950s to fewer than 300, of whom approximately   50 are active.

Stottler said the group hopes to acquire a smaller lodge in Redondo that will attract new, younger members. ER
