Best of the Beach comedy club is an understatement when describing Comedy and Magic Club. Just about every comedian who appears at the downtown Hermosa Beach landmark will tell you it’s the best of the world comedy club.
How else to explain Gary Shandling walking on stage last month, unannounced, to perform for a benefit for the Crown Jewel Club, which teaches etiquette to inner city teenage girls.
Shandling admitted he wasn’t there for the charity. He was there, he said, because he didn’t have anything better to do that Friday night.
Shandling was preceded on stage by “Mad About You’s” Paul Reiser, who was working out new material.
Just about every Sunday Jay Leno parks a car from his collection in front of club, then tests out new “Tonight Show” jokes with the Comedy and Magic Club audience.
The main reason the comedians cite for their affection for the club is owner Mike Lacey, a decent guy in a business where not everyone is. But another important reason, they say is the audience, which is there to laugh, not to judge. Which makes beach city residents the best comedy club audience not just at the beach, but anywhere in the world.
