Founded in 1978, the 33rd Manhattan Beach Hometown 10k Run will be held Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. with a combined start at 3rd & Valley and 3rd & Ardmore. Runners merge at 15th Street and finish on The Strand near the pier. For more information, visit www.mb10K.com.

Aquatics

“The Jimmy” 6th Annual Jimmy Miller Memorial Surf Fiesta will be held Sunday, Oct. 10 at Rosecrans Avenue in Manhattan Beach beginning at 7:30 a.m. Five-person teams consisting of one surfer from each skill level from ripper to beginner will ride a variety of surfboards in this one-of-a-kind surf competition. Following the contest, an after party, auction and awards ceremony will be held at Sangria Restaurant, 68 Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach. Proceeds benefit the Jimmy Miller Foundation’s effort to heal mental and physical illness through surfing and ocean related activities. Entry fee is $40 before Friday, Oct. 8. The OptimisSport Distance Swim Challenge will be held Saturday, Oct. 16 beginning at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The 12.6-mile swim consists of eight legs, each 1.2 to 2.4 miles in length, and ends at the Santa Monica Pier. At the end of each leg, participants must swim to the beach and check in with medical staff. For those not ready to conquer the full 12.6 miles, there will be competitions in three other distances: 4.8-miles, 2.4-miles, and 1.2-miles. Teams will be able to compete in an eight-stage 12.6-mile relay or a four-stage 4.8-mile relay. Basketball

Celebrating its 30th season, the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 10th grade. Fees are: $115 for first player; $100 for second; $90 for third. Mandatory tryouts begin Saturday, Oct. 16. For more information, call 310-372-BALL.

Volleyball

Tryouts for Surfside Volleyball Club will be held Friday at Del Aire Gsym, 12601 Isis Ave., Hawthorne, for ages 10 to 12 and Saturday at Manhattan Beach Middle School, 1501 Redondo Ave., Manhattan Beach for 13 and 14-year-olds. Tryout fees are $30 and each girl must be accompanied by a parent to sign a liability form and attend an informational meeting. El Camino College concludes its non-league schedule when the Warriors host Palomar Saturday at 6 p.m. at Murdoch Stadium.

The Prank Monkey coed flag football on the beach tournament is back for its annual random draw event on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Individuals are welcome and no experience is necessary. All teams will be picked at random, playing a minimum of two games. The cost of the tournament is $25 per person. Pre-registration available at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach. To ensure even teams, please sign up with an opposite sex co-entry. The Smackbowl Men’s and Women’s Flag Football Tournament on the Beach returns Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10th Street  and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Teams created in advance by captains, (maximum of 10 players per team) begin five-on-five play promptly at 10:30 a.m. The cost of the tournament is $160 per team via pre-registration at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach, or online at www.hermosabch.org. Triathlon

The Day at the Beach Triathlon in Hermosa Beach will be held Sunday, Oct. 10 at 7 a.m. Beginning with a ?-mile ocean swim, the race is followed by a 10-mile bike course completed with a three-mile out-and-back run on The Strand.
