Spring season high school athletes honored by CIF, league

Local athletes were acknowledged for their performances during the spring high school season including many who were selected to All-CIF teams.

Boys Volleyball

Four players from the Bay League were named to the All-CIF Division 1 team including two players from league champion Mira Costa.

Representing the Mustangs were senior outside hitter Casey White and senior opposite hitter Scott Stephanoff, who made the team for the second consecutive season.

The Harvard-bound White was named the Bay League’s MVP after a season where he amassed 275 kills, 117 digs and 18 aces.

Stephanoff sparked Mira Costa to a No. 1 ranking in Division 1 and an appearance in the semifinals after his return from an injury. The Long Beach State recruit finished with 234 kills, 91 digs and 31 blocks.

Redondo Union junior opposite hitter Louis Richard was named to the team as was senior setter Cole Fiers of Palos Verdes, who was named the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player.

Redondo libero Tyler Bird was selected as the Bay League’s Defensive Player of the Year.

In Division 4, Bishop Montgomery outside hitter Cameron Moeller was named the CIF Player of the Year. Joining Moeller on the All-CIF Division 4 team were fellow Knights junior setter Travis Pyrek and senior outside hitter Eddie Specht.

Vistamar senior outside hitter Colin McCall was an All-CIF selection for the second time, this year in Division 4.

Baseball

Mira Costa landed two seniors on the All-CIF Division 3 team after the Mustangs reached the CIF championship game for the first time since 1982.

Pitcher Chris Alcala and catcher Austin Henning (.372, 24 RBIs) were among the selections which also included two former Mustangs – Trent Hammond (Serra) and David Odle (Peninsula).

Locals players named to the Division 4 team were El Segundo sophomore shortstop Lars Nootbaar and South Torrance junior pitcher Matt Mogollon.

Redondo senior shortstop Fred Smith earned the title of Most Outstanding Player in the Bay League after batting .457 with 51 hits.

Softball

Mira Costa senior outfielder Taylor Glover was selected to the All-CIF Division 3 team after a season in which she batted .570 with three home runs, 25 RBIs, nine doubles, four triples and 50 runs scored. She also was a perfect 33 for 33 in stolen base attempts. Named the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player, Glover will take her talents to Cal State Northridge.

Also named to the Division 3 team were Peninsula infielder Brooke Christensen, North Torrance pitcher Sydni Overly and Torrance infielder Kamryn Watts.

Redondo freshman Kat Ung was named the Bay League MVP after leading the Sea Hawks to a league championship. The southpaw hurler came on strong in the circle, going 9-4 with 75 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA in 85 innings. She also hit .352 with one home run, 10 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Lacrosse

Bay League runner-up Redondo Union had three players from its boys team named to the All-League first team. Junior midfielder Harrison Faecher, sophomore attacker Josh Williamson and freshman attacker Preston Faecher earned accolades as did sophomore defender Joey Vigil who made the second team.

Mira Costa senior midfielder Clay Russert was named to the first team and seniors Alec Hong and Jeremy Silva were selected to the second team.

Top honors among the Bay League girls were shared by Mira Costa senior Susanna Sieke and Redondo senior Allison Kotzbach who were named Co-MVPs.

First team selections included Mira Costa’s Carly McGuire, Taylor Pool and Lia Sepanek along with Redondo’s Kelsie Currie, Emily Field and Hailey Newman.

Named to the second tam were Mira Costa teammates Noelle Claycomb, Ashley Duncan and Alexandria Kurugian and Redondo’s Maddie Farmer and Caitie Lowkeen.
