Redondo Beach council increases permit fees

The current Redondo Beach city logo is up to be replaced as a contest for a new design reaches deadline April 8.

The cost of a Redondo Beach parking permit has increased from $95 to $110.

Resident Frank O’Leary contested the increase at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, arguing that the public was “not given ample time to review this.”

“You know, we pay taxes because we want to pay for the cost of government but every new tax is an encroachment on our freedom… There has to be a legitimate reason for increasing these fees,” he said.

City Manager Bill Workman responded that Redondo Beach has some of the lowest parking rates in the coastal region and that “all the appropriate notifications have been made.”

Councilmember Matt Kilroy backed Workman.

“To me the annual parking pass is a bonus… for someone who frequents parking meters to actually reduce their costs and if raising that fee doesn’t reduce their cost they should just go back to putting quarters in the meter,” he said.

Currently 1,700 people pay for parking permits, which translates into $154,500 in revenues for the city. The increase is projected to raise the revenue rate, given the amount of users stays the same, to $180,000.

The council also raised the cost of filming permits.

Correction: This story previously announced the June 29 launch of a new shuttle service between Terranea Resort, the Riviera Village, and the Crowne Plaza, as per a public statement made by Councilmember Jeff Ginsburg at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Riviera Village Business Improvement District Board Executive Director Ellen Engelke has said Ginsburg misunderstood a discussion of the feasibility of the service. No launch date has been confirmed as yet.
