
Prior to next week’s showdown with rival Mira Costa, California’s top-ranked team Redondo will host the 32-team Redondo Power Classic Friday and Saturday. The tournament includes 16 teams ranked in the top ten of their respective CIF divisions and will used as a post-season tune-up for many of the participating schools.
Matches will be held in gyms at El Segundo, Redondo and South Torrance with pool play beginning Friday at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per day at each site.
Friday competition at Redondo includes Pools 1-4. Pool 1 features Harbor of Santa Cruz (No. 9, CIF Central Coast Section), Bishop Montgomery (No. 9, Div. 1-A), Oxnard (No. 3, Div. 2-A) and Nordhoff (No. 7, Div. 4-A).
Top seeded Redondo (No. 1, Div. 1-AA) will compete in Pool 2 against Marlborough, Los Osos (No. 7, Div. 2-AA) and Vista.
Second seeded Vista Murrieta (No. 7, Div. 1-AA), Yorba Linda (No. 10, Div. 2-A), Buena and West Torrance are in Pool 3.
Pool 4 competition includes defending champion Centennial of Bakersfield (No. 3, CIF Central Section), Notre Dame Academy, Palos Verdes and Rio Mesa.
South Torrance hosts Pool 5 and 6. Pool 5 includes Valencia (No. 10, Div. 1-A), South Torrance (No. 2, Div. 2-AA), Sacred Heart and Palisades (No. 1, LA City). Competing in Pool 6 will be Peninsula, Oaks Christian (No. 1, Div. 2-AA), Los Altos and Garces.
Playing at El Segundo with be Pool 7 teams Long Beach Poly, Santa Monica (No. 3, Div. 3-AA), Ventura and El Segundo along with Pool 8 teams El Dorado (No. 5, Div. 1-A), North Torrance (No. 3, Div. 2-AA), La Canada and Royal.
Divisional play (Gold, Silver and Bronze) begins Saturday at 9 a.m. Redondo will host Gold Division competition (top two teams from each pool) with the championship match slated for 3 p.m.
South hosts Silver Division (3rd place teams) action while Bronze Division (4th place teams) competitors play at El Segundo.
Prior to the Redondo Power Classic, the Sea Hawks will attempt to hold onto first place in the Bay League with wins at Palos Verdes on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. and at West on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
While Redondo is hosting its own tournament, Mira Costa will be competing in the Santa Barbara tournament on Friday and Saturday. Leading up to the tournament, the Mustangs continue league play hosting West on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. and traveling to Peninsula for a 4:15 p.m. match on Thursday.
In the final Bay League match, Mira Costa hosts Redondo Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs look to avenge their earlier four-set loss at Redondo and claim a share of the league title. The match will continue the tradition of serving as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.
