Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library will hold a sale of used books, VHS tapes and DVDs on 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 17, at their store on 1309 Bard St., a half block west of the local library.

“By a happy coincidence our sale falls on St. Patrick’s Day, so if you’re waiting for the parade [down Pier Avenue] to start, come in and spend an hour or so at the Bard Street Bookstore,” the Friends said in a prepared statement.

School love

The Hermosa Beach Education Foundation presents its annual “Hearts of Hermosa” dinner dance to benefit the city schools Saturday, March 24 at an elegantly tented venue next to the Hermosa Beach Community Center,720 Pier Ave.cocktail attire is suggested, items will be auctioned, and music will be provided by Vox DJs.

Doors open 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $140, or two for $250. Corporate and family sponsorships are available, and drink tickets also are available for pre-purchase. For more see HBEF.org.

Pageant time

A preliminary pageant in the Long Beach Grand Prix competition will be 9 p.m. Thursday, March 15 at Sharkeez on the Pier Plaza, Hermosa.

“While you’ll see bikinis, this is not a bikini contest – the winner goes to Grand Prix and Toyota functions through the year as Miss Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach,” organizers said.

The event is free.

Vampire weekend

A Providence/Little Company of Mary blood drive will be noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at the Clark Building, Valley Drive near Eighth Street, Hermosa. Sponsors include The Comedy & Magic Club, El Pollo Inka, Fresh & Easy Market & Fritto Misto restaurant.
