Campaign forums
Leadership Hermosa Beach hosts a forum for candidates for City Council and city treasurer positions 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the council chambers, 1315 Valley Drive.
The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau sponsors a forum of candidates for City Council 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Beach House, 1300 The Strand.
The debate will address fiscal and budgetary policy, developing and retaining local businesses, the business tax structure, city services and the city’s long-term financial viability.
Candidates for city treasurer will be invited to give short statements about their positions and policies. For more see HBchamber.net.
Pancakes
The 20th annual Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Woman’s Club of Hermosa Beach is at the Clark Building, 861 Valley Drive, 8 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $8 each or 2 for $15 and will benefit local philanthropies. The event features eggs, sausages and pancakes, kids, activities, a silent auction and raffle prizes including tickets to the Pantages Theatre.
Quake drill
A South Bay simulated earthquake drill Saturday, Oct. 15 will include participation by the City of Hermosa Beach, which will offer a sign-in 9 a.m. to noon in the City Hall parking lot, for people who want to respond in the event of real emergencies. Residents also can observe a Red Cross shelter drill, and attend a “Map Your Neighborhood” class.
The afternoon will see an earthquake preparedness drill by Beach Cities Joint CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) in a Manhattan Beach residential area near Mira Costa High School.

Book sale
A Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library used book sale will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1309 Bard Street, a half-block west of the library.
“As usual we have the best bargains of any bookstore around, and as a plus always look for the free give-away book cart,” the Friends notice announced. “We appreciate all the donations which in turn benefit all of our customers.”

Campaign event
A fundraiser for the reelection campaign of Councilman Michael DiVirgilio for City Council Fundraiser will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the home of Jim and Sara Robinson, 711 21st Street. The event, originally planned for the week before, was postponed because of a death in the family that called DiVirgilio and his wife Danay out of town.
