Mira Costa won the boys and girls team cross country championships at the 10th running of the South Bay Cup held at Columbia Park in Torrance.

Adam Perez finished first for the Mustangs with a time of 15 minutes, one second just ahead of teammate Zach Adler, who completed the 2.8-mile course in 15:05. Mira Costa is ranked No. 9 in CIF Division 2.

Mira Costa was aided by Travis Taylor (7th, 15:22), Sammy Nunan (9th, 15:24) and Pablo Diaz (15th, 15:46) who gave the Mustangs a score of 34 points, defeating West (39) and Santa Monica (95).

In the girls race, Mira Costa finished with 31 points, well ahead of San Pedro (61) and West (82). Kelli Sugimoto led the Mustangs with a 4th-place finish at 17:41, behind winner Evelyn Gonzalez of San Pedro (17:17) and Hermosa Beach sisters Liza (17:20) and Sophie Currin (17:30) who attend Vistamar in El Segundo.

Jenna Tong placed fifth for Mira Costa with a 17:42 mark. Abby Hong (10th, 18:16), Sarah Locke-Henderson (12th, 18:21) and Yvette Sandoval (13th, 18:30) contributed for the Mustangs who are ranked No. 5 in Division 2.

The Lady Mustangs proved they are just as talented running longer distances as Tong (42:31), Hong (42:54), Sugimoto (42:58) and Sandoval (43:43) finished in the top four positions, respectively, in the 15-17 age group at the Manhattan Beach 10K last Saturday,

Mira Costa will compete in the Central Park meet in Huntington Beach on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a tune-up for the second Bay League meet to be hosted by Palos Verdes on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 2:45 p.m.

Redondo competed in the Nike Pre-Nationals in Portland, Ore. on Sept. 24 and skipped the South Bay Cup but continued to turn in top performances when the Sea Hawks competed at the Warren Stauffer Invitational in South Gate last Saturday.

Junior Evan Malone-White (15:16.5) and sophomore William Tait (15:16.0) recorded the fastest times in the boys competition while winning their respective class races. Redondo’s boys team is ranked No. 10 in Division 2.

Other top ten finishers for Redondo’s boys team were senior Tyler Caracoza (4th, 15:32.9), juniors Garrett Klatte (4th, 15:57.0) and Dagmay Demsas (8th, 16:15.7), sophomore Dustin Herold (3rd, 15:59.0) and freshmen Carlos Suarez (2nd, 16:26.2) and Sergio Rodriguez (4th, 17:01.2).

Redondo junior Cara Ulizio (17:36.8) and senior teammate Lyndsey Mull (17:39.2) placed first in their class races while posting the fastest times of the day in girls action. The Sea Hawks are ranked No. 4 in Division 2.

Also placing in the top ten were senior Anique Villegas (4th, 19:07.8), juniors Kayla Ferron (3rd, 18:16.4) and Alexis Thibodeau (4th, 18:27.1), sophomore Sienna Hsu (7th, 19:48.2) and freshman Nicole Pederson (3rd, 19:54.6).
