With its 3-1 victory at rival Redondo, Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team captured its second consecutive Bay League Tuesday evening but considers it one more step toward the Mustang’s quest of a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 title.
After a slow start that saw Mira Costa drop the first set 23-25, the Mustangs regrouped to win the next three games 25-19, 25-23, 25-19.
“It’s always a tough match against Redondo,” Mira Costa coach Sean Shoptaw said. “It’s a big match for both teams. Winning the Bay League is one of our goals each season as is winning a CIF championship.”
Jackson Wedbush served eight straight points in the third game helping Mira Costa overcome a 7-2 deficit while providing momentum for the Mustangs who forced Redondo to commit several crucial errors in the match.
The fourth game was controlled by Mira Costa who jumped out to a 4-0 lead and didn’t look back. Wedbush led the Mustangs with a match-high 24 kills to go with 14 digs.
Roy McFarland recorded 14 kills and Rob Mullahey finished with 52 assists in the win.
Redondo was led by Lucas Lossone who posted 15 kills, two blocks and four digs. Logan Glave added 13 kills and eight digs and setter Sean Michael-Cramer contributed 51 assists and seven blocks.
Mira Costa (22-4) entered the week ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division 1 while Redondo (17-11) held the No. 9 spot.
Mira Costa has defeated six of the other nine top-ten teams and has the opportunity to take down No. 1 Huntington Beach when the Mustangs host the Oilers Thursday at 6 p.m. in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Mira Costa gave Huntington Beach a battle in a 28-26, 25-22 loss during the Best of the west tournament on Mar. 12.
Bay League runner-up Palos Verdes (25-8) is ranked No. 7 in Division 1 and finished third in the Gold Bracket of the Redondo Varsity Classic last Saturday.
