After resigning from her post on the Hermosa Beach City Council to pursue a congressional campaign, Nanette Barragan is staying on the dais for another month.

Barragan, who became mayor on June 23, had originally announced she would step down on July 31 to focus on her run for Congress in her hometown of the 44th District, which includes San Pedro, Compton and Carson.

In a written statement, Barragan said she is extending her stay on council to ensure that the city’s ban on plastic bags is fully passed. Council voted 3-2 at its July 28 meeting last meeting to support the ban. The final vote is on the agenda for the Aug. 25 meeting.

“That legislative accomplishment is very important to me,” she said. “I’ve supported a ban on plastic bags for some time. They are a significant public nuisance. … Eliminating them is a simple fix and it will benefit our community, the people who live here and the environment we all share. For that reason, I will end my time on the council once the plastic bag issue is 100% resolved.”

Mayor Pro Tem Caroline Petty has assumed the role of mayor since August . 1. The council is expected to discuss its options for replacing Barragan–likely by a special election or by appointment of a qualified resident–in a closed session on Aug. 25.
