About Town Redondo: Tulita benches for Averys, Artesia store opening

Redondo Beach Unified School District

Benches dedicated for Avery children at Tulita

Two benches were approved for Tulita Elementary School by the Redondo Unified school board Feb. 11 in honor of two siblings, former students who lost their lives to brain cancer last year. Kalea and Noah Avery were the daughter and son of Duncan and Nohea Avery.

Nohea addressed the board, with Duncan, RUHS’ surf coach, at her side.

She told of how she would say to the kids after a late chemotherapy trip to the hospital that they did not have to finish all of their homework, they could go to school a little later the next day, for more rest.

“But they always got their homework done and were on time the next morning,” Nohea said. “Tulita meant that much to them.”

Boardmember Raymur Flynn spoke after the vote to approve.

“I want to thank the Avery family for sharing their little angels, and it is an honor to permanently recognize them and to be a reminder that we should be grateful for every single day that we have.”
