Donations for sealions

A record number of sealion pups have been washing up emaciated on the shores of California this year, including those of the South Bay. Some experts say their food supply has been dwindling due to global warming, forcing mothers to spend longer hunting for food. Hungry pups have set off on their own but are unable to really feed themselves.

The Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro is one organization that has been taking in more animals. The Manhattan Beach Fire Department has agreed to be a drop-off location for donations, which are tax-deductible. A list of needed items can be found atmarinemammalcare.org/wish-list/.

Woman of the Year

State Assemblyman David Hadley of Manhattan Beach named Rosalinda Garcia the 2015 Woman of the Year for the 66th district, which includes the South Bay. Garcia is the chief programs officer for the Pediatric Therapy Network, which provides services like speech and physical therapy to over 2,500 children with special needs each year. She is also the mother of a former patient of the Torrance-based center.

Rosalinda currently serves as the chairperson of the Parent Advisory Board for the Southwest Special Education Local Plan Area. For the past two years, she has served on the Redondo Beach Unified School District’s Strategic Planning Committee. She also volunteers her time for the Redondo Sunset Little League.

The assembly began honoring women in 1987 as a way to commemorate Women’s History Month.

Lunafest
Soroptimist International Manhattan Beach is hosting Lunafest, a fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities. Eight films will play on March 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. The proceeds from the festival will go to the Breast Cancer Fund and Soroptimist to help fund scholarships, community awards and more. ER
