World Series trophy visits Fat Face Fenner’s Fishshack

The line was out the door, everyone was dressed in Boston blue and red and “Sweet Caroline,” a Red Sox anthem, was pumping out of massive speakers.
No, it wasn’t Yawkey Way. It was Hermosa Beach’s Fat Face Fenner’s Fishshack last Friday afternoon, where west coast members of Red Sox Nation came out in droves to see the 2013 World Series Trophy.
This was the second time the Commissioner’s Trophy made a visit to Fenner’s. The first was back in 2006, after the Sox’s historic world championship win after an 86 year drought. Owner Gary Vincent contacted his friends at the front office of the ball club after the Oct. 30, 2013 win. As luck would have it, the trophy was making a trip to Los Angeles for a scouting convention. Fenner’s was an easy detour.
In the short two hour visit, hundreds of local Red Sox fans made their way into the Hermosa Pier bar. A $10 donation to the Jimmy Fund granted entry and a chance to have a photo taken with the shining statue. The mood was euphoric, the beer flowing and the music, an appropriate Boston playlist including Dropkick Murphys and “Dirty Water,” loud and raucous.
Though the back room of Fenner’s where the trophy was stationed was crowded and chaotic, fans were gracious to one another, quickly taking their turn with the trophy and moving out of the way so the next person could have their moment. Boston fans from the very young to the very old were captured by a professional photographer, and the photos are posted on the Fat Face Fenner’s Fishshack Facebook page.
With a sad loss for the Patriots on Sunday, it was a great time for Boston sports fans to relive the glory of the 2013 Red Sox season. And the Fenner’s crowd excitedly noted that the 2014 is almost upon us. Pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers for spring training in less than a month. ER
