Volleyball: The 10th Annual Jayo Invitational Celebrity Pro-Am beach volleyball tournament will be played Saturday at Dockweiler State Beach. Pro Captains include Gold Medalists Kerri Walsh, Dain Blanton, Eric Fonoimoana along with World Champion Holly McPeak, 3-time Olympian Jeff Nygaard and Tour Champions Casey Jennings and Albert Hannemann. They join stars Rene Russo, Amber Valetta, John Heder, Galen Gering, Victoria Rowell, Windsor Harmon, Jason Olive and many more. The Sinjin Smith Kids Clinic is offered free to 200 children. The California Beach Volleyball Association will be holding tournaments Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Saturday’s action features Men’s Unrated and Women’s Open divisions. Sunday’s competition includes Men’s Open, Women’s A and Coed A and AAA divisions. Cost is $42.50 per team. The Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU) Southern Pacific Beach Volleyball Committee hosts its Tour Championships on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Competition begins at 9 a.m. featuring boys and girls 18U/16U/14U/12U/10U divisions. Open to AAU members, the cost of the tournament in $63.99 per player. Open to boys and girls ages 7-15, the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) is taking sign-ups for its Hermosa Beach league. Basketball: Dave Miller, former NBA/NCAA basketball coach and current Laker basketball analyst, will be hosting his MVP summer basketball camp August 5-9 from 9-3 p.m. The camp is for boys and girls ages 5-14 and will be held at the Aviation Sports Complex, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Redondo Beach. Football: The first Thursday night season of the Co-ed Flag Football on the Beach League begins Aug. 29 at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Cost is $265 per team for the six week season and two weeks of playoffs. Soccer: The 36th Annual Peninsula Soccer Camp will take place at Palos Verdes High School from Aug. 5-9. The camp is for boys and girls ages 6 to 14 and run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (full day) and 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (1/2 day). There will be guest speakers, an experienced coaching staff and each camper receives a soccer ball. The cost is $230 (full day) and $115 (1/2 day). Cycling: The South Bay Wheelmen hosts a group ride on the first Saturday of every month. Cyclists meet in the parking lot of the Catalina Coffee Company, 126 N. Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach at 9 a.m. The moderately-paced ride is 30-40 miles with some climbing and regroups at several points so no one gets left behind. The Wheelmen also hosts the Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races that began this week and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 29 on a course in Carson. Men and women divisions compete in several age groups where racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series.
