Uber driver robbed at gunpoint in Hermosa Beach, suspects arrested

Authorities have arrested three juveniles in connection with robbing an Uber driver at gunpoint around 1 a.m. Thursday in the Von’s parking lot in Hermosa Beach.

Anthony Mateo, 19, of Los Angeles, Alexis Stewart, 19, of Los Angeles, and Dwaun Jennings, 18, of Pomona were arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Hermosa Beach police, the Uber driver, a Redondo Beach resident, was parked in the Von’s parking lot at 710 Pier Avenue. He was outside his car using his phone when one of the suspects approached him, pointing a handgun at the victim and demanding money and smartphone. When the victim complied, the suspect entered a nearby car occupied by two other suspects and fled the area.

According to police, the victim followed the suspect vehicle into the Lawndale area where he flagged down a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, who stopped the suspects’ car and arrested them. Authorities recovered a replica handgun and the victim’s phone and items from the vehicle.

Each suspect is being held on $100,000 bail.
