Senior health fair

This year’s Senior and Adult Disabled Health Fair will be held at the Aviation Gym on Friday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Over 40 healthcare providers and organizations will be offering health screenings and services free of charge. Among the services being offered are flu shots, eye tests, testing for blood pressure, hearing, anemia, and lung capacity, and briefings about power of attorney for healthcare.

A free shuttle service will be running between the main library and Aviation Gym from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Breaking ground

In November of last year, voters passed Measure Q, which earmarked funding for a district-wide 1.6 megawatt solar energy project, expected to offset 70 percent of energy used by Redondo Beach schools.

The project will reduce the district’s electricity bills and consumption from Edison, translating into approximately $15 million in savings over 25 years.

Additionally, the solar project will create cleaner air for students and the community by reducing 16,172 tons of carbon pollution over the next 25 years. This is equivalent to taking 2,890 cars off the road or planting 24,540 trees.

The project is currently in the design and engineering phase. To celebrate this exciting clean-energy initiative, the Redondo Beach Unified School District is holding an event to honor the start of construction at Lincoln Elementary School on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. Systems are projected to be fully operational in the spring of 2014.

Drug take-back

Redondo Beach will take part in the DEA-organized National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign on Saturday, Oct. 26. The DEA is coordinating the campaign as a means to collect potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets.

Redondo Beach will have two drop off sites – 320 Knob Hill and 1922 Artesia Blvd. – that residents can use from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or over-the-counter drugs will be accepted. Hypodermic needles will also be accepted. Illicit substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, are not part of this program and will not be accepted.

This program is free and anonymous, no questions asked. With questions, contact Officer Don Martinez of the Community Services Unit at (310) 379-2477 x2565.
