New HR director
Kym Vieira has been hired as the new human resources director for the City of Redondo Beach. She will be responsible for personnel, labor relations, training, and risk management.
“Kym joins Redondo Beach at an important time and has an impressive background as a human resources professional that will serve the organization and community well,” said City Manager Bill Workman.
For the past 12 years, Vieira has held human resources leadership roles for Stanislaus County. In her most recent assignment, she was responsible labor relations with 12 labor unions, oversight of the county’s Equal Employment Opportunity Program, and employee disability management programs.
Vieira received both her Master’s in Public Administration and Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from California State University, Stanislaus.
New crossing guard signs
The Redondo Beach Police Department will be deploying illuminated hand held crossing guard stop signs at all crossing guard locations in the city.
The signs, which contain flashing LED red lights, are designed for high visibility in all weather conditions to alert on-coming motorists to react and stop sooner, allowing pedestrians and children to cross streets in a safe manner.
The signs will be deployed at each crossing guard location in the city at the beginning of the school year.
CERT enrollment open
The Redondo Beach CERT Alumni Association (RBCERTAA) is encouraging residents to sign-up for the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) offered by the Redondo Beach Fire Department.
The training session is once a week for eight weeks on Thursday evenings starting Sept. 5 in the upstairs conference room of the main Redondo Library.
The classes are taught by Redondo Firefighters and cover disaster preparedness, CPR, first aid, light search and rescue, terrorism preparedness, disaster psychology, and team organization.
For all 8 weeks the cost is $40 for residents or Redondo and $100 for non-residents. This includes received CPR & First Aid Certification and a graduation certificate. The classes are open for anyone 18 and over.

Eating habits seminar
Nutritionist Lily Nichols will be speaking about eating habits – including stress eating and knowing when to stop – at HALE Pilates in Redondo Beach on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 2 to 3:45 p.m.
Past workshop attendee Juli Lindsay has said the workshop “radically changed my understanding of food and how to intelligently fuel my body.”
“I find myself referring back to her teachings on a daily basis,” she said.
