Strand Stairs
The Public Works Department is holding its third public meeting regarding improvements to The Strand stairs this Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the public works yard training room at 3621 Bell Avenue.
Globally-acclaimed African children’s choir coming to town
The Watoto Children’s Choir from Africa are making two stops in Manhattan Beach as part of their West Coast tour: Saturday at 6 p.m. at Journey of Faith and next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. The choir, deemed as Watoto ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa, will perform vibrant, original African music with dance routines and life-transforming stories in their act entitled “Beautiful Africa: A New Generation,” described as an energetic fusion of contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythm.
Since 1994, 64 Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled to Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, France and the U.S., performing for royalty, presidents, ministers and ordinary audiences. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents due to HIV/AIDS, war or poverty.
Neptunian’s birthday party
The Manhattan Beach Neptunian Woman’s Club is celebrating its 105th birthday this Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Neptunian Clubhouse at 920 Highland Avenue. Tickets are $75 per person and available at neptunians.org.
Walk with Sally mixer
January is National Mentor Month and Walk With Sally is celebrating by hosting a mixer at The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. with complimentary food and drinks. Current and past mentors will also be sharing information on how to get involved with the organization. Tickets are available online.
Weight-loss challenge
