Santiago Aulet has been a train modeler his entire life and eventually worked building train models for the movie industry. Now, he spreads his knowledge of tracks, trains and towns to others interested in getting involved in the small-scaled hobby. A Redondo Beach resident, Aulet started “Model Train Workshop” in 2012 in response to a need he saw in the community. He started bringing layouts to retirement homes to allow seniors to set up a working layout and operate the trains. He has expanded, building commissioned models and layouts and getting old trains to run again. He also teaches people how to run their models. “I see it as a gift because people can learn how to build their own empire,” Aulet said. “I see people enjoying this as much as I do. It’s [an invaluable] gift, it’s the knowledge of how to have fun.” The Model Train Workshop is for people of all ages. “This is the hobby that makes kids feel like adults and makes adults feel like kids,” said Aulet. A basic class costs $38 including supplies. More services are priced per job. Email Model.Train.Workshop@gmail.com or call 310-938-2512 for more information.
