Here’s a few clips of a week in the life of Drop Zone as it pays a visit to our local surf scene. Surfing is not just about what’s breaking out front, but of the community that shares the same passion. So the question is, why wouldn’t we document “what’s going on” in the local surf scene? Weekly, the Drop Zone will share its experiences navigating the South Bay, either chasing swell and/or story.

Vanguard Surf shop

Vanguard Surf Shop with owner Kim Robinson and shop employee Brennan Losey. Vanguard has been a stable for almost twenty years in South Torrance. A sponsor to numerous high school surf teams and an advocate for local skate parks (and with a hot skate team), watch out for the shop surf team in the local competition scene.

Maki Skateboards

Drop Zone paid a visit to Maki Longboards in El Segundo. Here owner Erik Maki holds up his recent handmade concept, a skateboard that borrows heavily from the Traditional 60s style Surfboard with the fabric inlay on the deck.

The best day ever! Author Gerald B. Derloshon sent the Drop Zone his biograghy on Hermosa Beach surf legend, Dewey Weber entitled, “Little Man on Wheels.” www.littlemanonwheels.com

JMJ wetsuits

The author has been friends with the JMJ Wetsuits crew since his inclination to a more vintage style aesthetic; smooth skin black short and long johns and beavertails inspired by decades prior. They also make damn great custom dive and surf suits too.

Tyler Surfboard

Tyler Hatzikian of Tyler Surfboards preparing a “special” Double Deuce model, early 60s style pig. This type of equipment was the standard for the inspiration it’s perfected on, boards of the surf scene at 22nd st. Hermosa Beach. Drop Zone asked Tyler to participate in a super secret project that will be documented in the November’s issue. Keep Hep and see the goings when the issue drops November 8th.
