Mira Costa and Redondo Union joined three Bay League rivals in advancing to the next round in their respective divisions in the CIF Southern Section Girls Basketball Championships as South Bay teams turned in strong performances on Saturday.

Fourth-seeded Redondo (18-9) throttled visiting Kaiser 60-22 behind Tatiana Maimot’s 10-point, five-rebound performance.

Meghan Peneueta recorded seven points, four steals and three assists and Nao Shiota added six points, seven steals and six assists for the Sea Hawks who will travel to Yucaipa (12-11) on Wednesday for a Division 2AA second-round game.

All games with the exception of the finals are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Mira Costa (19-10), which finished fourth in the Bay League but earned an eighth seed in Division 2AA, defeated River Valley runner-up La Sierra 47-32 on the road.

Camille Mills led the Mustangs with 16 points, Michelle Lanterman contributed seven points and Shannon Savino added five points.

“Defense was the key to our win,” Mira Costa head coach John Lapham said. “We held La Sierra to eight points in the second half and limited our turnovers which we needed because we struggled to shoot well. We were cold on our 3-pointers and missed free throws. But we have great senior leadership and if we play defense like we did, we have a great chance of winning.”

Mira Costa will host Alta Loma (14-13), who upset No. 9 Pioneer Valley 57-55, in the second round on Wednesday.

In Division 1A, seventh-seeded Peninsula (18-8) ran over host Katella 82-48 and will host No. 10 Cypress (24-3) on Wednesday.

Bay League champion West Torrance improved its record to 24-6 as the top-seeded Warriors routed Baldwin Park 83-26 in a Division 2A first-round game. West will travel to Rio Mesa (12-14) in the second round.

It was also a good start for Pioneer League teams competing in Division 2A. Fourth-seeded North Torrance (20-7) eliminated Norwalk 75-34 and will travel to No. 13 Golden Valley (15-11) on Wednesday.

Sixth-seeded South Torrance (20-7) knocked off Garden Grove 52-34 and will host No. 11 Victor Valley (17-4). Torrance (14-11) ran by Beverly Hills 74-25 and will host No. 2 El Dorado (23-4) in the second round.

In Division 3AA, No. 13 Palos Verdes upset No. 4 Diamond Bar 45-43 at home and will travel to No. 12 Yorba Linda (10-13) for a quarterfinal game on Wednesday.

After earning a first-round bye, Del Rey champion Bishop Montgomery (20-8) had little trouble beating No. 13 El Segundo 60-34 and will host No. 10 St. Anthony (19-8) in the quarterfinals.

In Division 5AA, No. 12 Chadwick lost its second-round game at No. 5 Desert 46-24.
