Cycling: Several South Bay cyclists claimed medals at the USA Cycling National Masters Championships held Aug. 19-24 in Redmond, WA. Riding for Team Ironfly, Redondo Beach’s Kevin Phillips won three gold and one silver, including wins in the 80-lap Points Race, four-man Team Pursuit and the Madison where he teamed with Jonathan Davy, of Torrance. Davy was a member of the Team Pursuit winning team and won bronze in the Individual Pursuit. Gerald Agnew, of Rancho Palos Verdes, captured gold in Team and Individual Pursuit, Neva Day (Manhattan Beach) won silver in Individual Pursuit, Christian Tregillis (Manhattan Beach) finished fourth in his Individual Pursuit age group race and Melanie Phillips (Redondo Beach) recorded two fifth-place finishes.

 

The Dave Richardson Race Series, an annual event sponsored by the Redondo Beach-based South Bay Wheelmen, will hold the first of 10 races on Sunday, Sept 14 at 8:30 a.m. at Telo Avenue in Torrance. The races are a mix of criteriums, road races, and time trials. Only South Bay Wheelmen members can race and riders must have a United States Cycling Federation license to participate. Football: El Camino College will be playing its home games this season at Redondo Union High School while construction of its new football stadium takes place. The Warriors will hold the first of five home games Saturday, Sept. 13 against Ventura College marking their only home non-conference game. All home games kick off at 4 p.m. El Camino will play four National Central Conference home games against Citrus (Sept. 27), Cerritos (Oct. 11),  Harbor (Oct. 25) and Mt. San Antonio (Nov. 8).

 

Volleyball:  Smack Sportswear will be hosting its Fall Classic and Volleyball Class Reunion at Saturday, Sept. 13 on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Entries to the Coed 4’s beach volleyball tournament can be made as a team or as an individual. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. Games begin at 9:30 a.m. Prizes include Spalding Beach volleyballs, Smack boardshorts/bikinis, Dicks Sporting Goods and Sharkeez gift cards worth $50-100, free entries into Smackfest in July 2015 and a raffle for two Bud Light cruisers. Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a ¼ mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run. A 1-hour swim clinic will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. at 10th Street in Hermosa Beach. Fees are $115 (individual) and $180 (relay). Add $10 after Aug. 31.
