Sending a record eight athletes to the CIF State Track & Field Championship in Clovis, Redondo Union came away with 10th-place finishes in the boys and girls 800-meter races on Saturday.

Amber Gore dropped off from her third-place time of 2 minutes, 11.09 seconds in the 800 at the Masters Meet the prior week, finishing in 2:12.06 at the State meet.

“I was hoping for a better time and place, but you can’t always run your best race when you want it,” Gore said. “So with that, I just look to next year to improve.”

North Torrance’s Jasmine Bass placed 4th in the triple jump with a mark of 39-11.5, Peninsula’s Tunika Onnekikami finished 9th in the 400 with a time of 55.78 and South Torrance distance runner Kimberly Coscia placed 17th in the 3,200 with a time of 10:46.67.

Redondo’s Anevay Hiehle, who won the Master Meet with a time of 2:09.19, was nursing a foot injury suffered after the Master Meet and did not finish in the preliminary race.

“I commend her bravery for getting on the line, knowing she might have an injury,” Gore said.

The Sea Hawk’s girls 4×400 relay team also did not reach the finals placing 18th in the prelims with a time of 3:57.67, well of its Masters Meet winning time of 3:49.03. Anastasia Chiodo filled in for Hiehle.

Redondo freshman Kaitlin Heri did reach the finals in the pole vault, placing 12th with a mark of 11-03.

Not advancing from the prelims was Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson, who finished 15th in the 300 hurdles (43.88) and Peninsula’s Tammy McVickar, whose mark of 5-05 in the high jump was 12th-best.

In the boys 800, Redondo’s Sergio Rodriguez placed 10th with a mark of 1:53.68, improving his time of 1:54.77 set at the Masters Meet.

Palos Verdes had two distance runners finish in the top ten. Miles Irish finished 5th in the 1,600 (4:11.70) and Casey Celestin placed 8th in the 3,200 (9:01.29).

Failing to reach the finals were Redondo runners Dustin Herold, who placed 18th in the 1,600 prelims (4:16.12) and Nicolas Wells, who finished 22nd in the 800 (1:57.16).
