Lexicon artists will gather this Saturday at the Redondo Beach Main Library for a Scrabble tournament to raise money for The Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to improving children’s special programs and offering digital services like the library’s free mobile app, which allows patrons to renew books and access the entire library catalog from their tablet or mobile phone.

The tournament plans to use the fifth edition of the Official Scrabble Players’ Dictionary, which was released today by Merriam-Webster. The new edition adds 5,000 new words, including new slang like “selfie” and “soju”, a Korean vodka-like spirit that has gained recent mainstream popularity.

The tournament is open to the public ages 14 and up and is limited to 40 players. Prizes will be awarded for highest overall score, highest individual game score, and highest scoring word.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, and the tournament runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost to participate is $20, and interested players can call The Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library store at (310) 318-0675 x 2587 to see if spaces are still available. The Redondo Beach Public Library is located at 303 N Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach.  Free underground parking is available.
