Giving back to the community is a large part of the lives of Alex Curry and Vera Jimenez and, despite demanding schedules, both will play active roles in the 29th Annual Richstone Pier-to-Pier Walkathon on Saturday, April 30 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Fox Sports anchor Alex Curry will be hosting the Walkathon and KTLA meteorologist Vera Jimenez will serve as honorary chair for the event that takes place during National Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Curry, a Manhattan Beach native and former soccer standout at Mira Costa High School, is in the midst of a hectic few months covering the LA Kings and their quest for a third Stanley Cup along with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Yet Curry finds time to work with kids in a number of organization including Richstone Family Center.

“Growing up in the South Bay, and still being able to call it my home has been a blessing,” Curry said. “From a young age my mother, Peggy Curry, instilled in our family how important it is to always give back to your community. Something that has always been a passion of mine is mentoring and talking with kids, and I’ve been very fortunate to do so with the organizations I work for, FOX Sports, LA Kings and the Angels. So recently I started a mentoring program of my own with the Richstone Family Center, attaching on to their Kids Club after school program. We bring people in from all different jobs and backgrounds to get to know, inspire and hang out with the kids. It’s still a new program, but I’m very excited to see it grow.”

Jimenez can be seen on the KTLA 5 News at 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. She is a partner of the Hermosa Beach Fish Shop and believes strongly in maintaining a balanced lifestyle that includes nutrition, exercise and fitness.

“My first experience with Richstone Family Center was this past Christmas,” Jimenez said. “As a business owner in the South Bay, it’s really important to us to support our community. So for Christmas, The Hermosa Beach Fish Shop became a drop off site for their wrapping paper and decoration drive.

“That’s how I learned about the life changing and life saving work Richstone Family Center does and has done for over forty years. It’s awe inspiring and an honor to help. The Walkathon takes place on one morning. They’re asking us to spare a couple of hours one morning so they can continue to give countless families hope. I am so thankful for the work they do because it builds and strengthens the health of our community and society as a whole.”

The walkathon begins at 8 a.m. with walkers and runners starting at the Manhattan Beach Pier, traveling to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back. The event is unique as it includes live music along the route as well as food and beverage vendors, and fitness trunk shows.

Registration is available at RichstoneFamily.org through Friday, April 29. The $25 entry fee includes an official Richstone Family Center t-shirt, access to all vendors, giveaways, photo booth and more.

Founded in 1974, Richstone Family Center is dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse and trauma; strengthening and educating families; and decreasing violence in families, schools and communities.
