Redondo Union’s Anevay Heihle sprints to 800-meter win at CIF Masters Meet

Redondo Union junior Anevay Hiehle used a burst of speed in the final 200 meters to pass favorite Ashlyn Rambo of Mater Dei and Sea Hawk teammate Amber Gore to capture the girls 800 meter race at the CIF Masters Meet at Cerritos College on Friday.

Hiehle crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 9.19 seconds, the third fastest time in the state this season.

Heihle and Gore, who posted a time of 2:11.09, qualified for the State Championships to be held Friday and Saturday, June 6-7 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

The duo also qualified as part of Redondo’s 4×400 relay team, teaming with Breya Wynne and Zuri Henderson to finish fourth with a time of 3:49.03.

Freshman pole vaulter Kaitlin Heri advanced to the State meet with an automatic qualifying mark of 11 feet, 7 inches.

Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson qualified with a seventh-place finish in the 300 hurdles (43.32)

North Torrance’s Jasmine Bass won a Masters title in the triple jump at 39-1 and Peninsula had two girls qualify for the State meet.

Tunika Onnekikami finished fourth in the 400 (54.96) and high jumper Tammy McVickar cleared the automatic qualifying mark of 5-5.

South Torrance distance runner Kimberly Coscia advanced with a fifth-place finish in the 3,200 (10:18.87).

Three members of Redondo’s boys team also qualified for the State Championships. Dustin Herold finished fifth in the 1,600 (4:11.79) while teammates Nicolas Wells (fifth, 1:54.60) and Sergio Rodriguez (seventh, 1:54.77) advanced in the 800.

Also qualifying were Palos Verdes’ Miles Irish in the 1,600 (sixth, 4:12.70) and Casey Celestin in the 3,200 (eighth, 9:04.03).
