Redondo Union, Mira Costa advance in CIF boys volleyball championships

All three Bay League teams advanced to Thursday’s second-round matches in the Division 1 CIF Southern Section/Ford boys volleyball championship.

Fourth-seeded Redondo (31-2) defeated visiting Alemany 25-13, 25-17, 21-15, 25-19 Tuesday and will place at Thousand Oaks (22-11) who eliminated Valencia/Valencia in five sets. The winner will face the winner between No. 5 San Clemente and Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals on Saturday. All matches with the exception of the finals are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Redondo would like the opportunity to avenge a semifinal loss to San Clemente in the Varsity Classic two weeks ago.

Mira Costa (29-8) won its opening-round home match sweeping Mission Viejo 25-11, 25-17, 25-16. The sixth-seeded Mustangs will travel to face Trabuco Hills (21-8) on Thursday. The winner advances to take on the victor between No. 3 Loyola and St. John Bosco.

Palos Verdes (17-16) stunned Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks 25-15, 13-25, 25-20, 25-23 and will host top-seeded Huntington Beach (33-0) in the second round Thursday.

In Division 2, third-seeded El Segundo (18-3) swept Saddleback 25-14, 25-15, 25-10 and will play at Foothill (16-4) on Thursday.

Fifth-seeded South Torrance (21-8) had little trouble defeating visiting Highland 25-14, 25-13, 25-13. The Spartans will host Norco (17-1) in the second round.

After winning its wild-card match against Nordhoff, Torrance (14-17) lost to host Lakewood 25-12, 25-14, 25-22.

In Division 4, second-seeded Bishop Montgomery (17-8) rolled over visiting Whitney 25-12, 25-12, 25-13 and will travel to Savanna (14-8) in the second round.

Chadwick (19-5) won a hard-fought battle with visiting El Rancho 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 19-25, 15-13 and will host No. 5 Salesian (17-4) in the second round.

Seventh-seeded Vistamar (21-8) advanced in the Division 5 playoffs after a 25-10, 25-17, 25-6 win over visiting Providence. Vistamar will host No. 10 Mary Star of the Sea (16-7), a five-game winner against Avalon.
