Margaret Ann Goldberg, 45, was found dead by Redondo Beach police in an apartment on the 1200 block of Agate Street in Redondo Beach this morning, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department. Police said she had suffered a gunshot wound.
Detectives are investigating the incident as homicide and suspect foul play. Redondo Beach Lieutenant Joe Hoffman said the murder is believed to be a domestic violence issue and that the victim was specifically targeted. “It is an isolated incident,” he said.

Police received a call at 9:08 a.m. from New York asking police to check on the welfare of the woman, and responded to the call at 9:38 a.m.

Neighbors said the victim was a mother of two children, including one in junior high school and one in elementary school. The children were informed of the death while they were at school, according to neighbors. The children were in police custody at press time.

On Wednesday, police were seeking suspect Russell Scott Goldberg, 49, of Redondo Beach, who they believed was carrying a weapon. Goldberg has one firearm registered in his name, police said. “Due to the nature of the crime, we believe he is armed and dangerous,” Hoffman said.

Margaret and Russell Goldberg had recently finalized their divorce, police said. An acquaintance of the family who knew both Margaret and Russell Goldberg through youth soccer described it as “an ugly divorce” and noted that the two would both attend games to watch their children play but would always stand on opposite sides of the field.

“He was kind of a joker type of guy, a New Yorker, a little brash,” the acquaintance said. “He said it was a rough divorce…that she was coming at him with all guns blazing, as far as trying to take him to the cleaners.”
Goldberg was believed to be driving a 2007 Green Saturn Vue, with the California license plate: 6NAP316. The Saturn has a yellow bumper sticker affixed to the rear bumper diagonally, police said.

At the scene of the crime, the 1200 block of Agate Street was completely blocked off by police tape. A police tent was set up outside of the house where the woman was found. The house was surrounded by red tape.

“It sucks, it’s a really safe neighborhood,” said George Perez, 32, who lives on Agate Street. Perez said the biggest issue in the neighborhood is parking. “From 6 to 8 p.m. that’s when the war begins,” he said, of street parking.

Another neighbor said she doesn’t feel safe. “It’s scary and unsettling,” said Ashley, who declined to give her last name. ”It just shows that stuff like this can happen anywhere.” When she looked outside her window this morning and saw police, she thought a movie was being filmed, she said.

At press time, the SWAT team was sent to Goldberg’s house on Rockefeller Lane.
“We’re using every bit of technology possible,” police said, on trying to find the suspect.

Police ask that anyone who encounters Goldberg call 911. Those with information about the man are encouraged to call the Redondo Beach Police Department at 310-937-6685 or text 310-339-2362. “There is currently no information on his whereabouts, we are asking for the community to help find him,” Hoffman said.
