Decrease DUI deaths
The RBPD was awarded a $76,500 traffic and safety grant for an anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on the roadways. The grant will target impaired drivers as well as educate the public on the dangers through the use of DUI and driver’s license checkpoints. According to a release from the RBPD, in the last year in Redondo Beach, one person was killed and 18 people were injured in alcohol and drug-impaired crashes.
Holiday tree recycling
Holiday trees will be picked up on residents’ regular trash days beginning Dec. 26 through Jan. 18. Trees should be free of decorations, tinsel, metal and plastic containers, ornaments, stands and lights. Flocked trees and trees coated with fire retardant will be accepted. All trees will be mulched following collection. Additional drop-off places will be at Hopkins Wilderness Park at 11-2 Camino Real, Dominguez Park at 200 Flagler Lane and Anderson Park at 2229 Ernst Avenue. Street sweeping and trash collection
The City will be closed for the Holidays on Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1. Street sweeping will be cancelled on those same days. Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 trash collection will be delayed by one day. Street sweeping will resume on Jan. 2.
RUHS AP honor
Redondo Union High School placed on the College Board’s third AP District Honor Roll for significant gains in Advanced Placement access and student performance. The honor means that RUHS is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit most from AP course work. Since 2010, RUHS has increased the number of students participating in AP from 564 in 2010 to 561 in 2012 with an 83 percent pass rate in 2012.
Citizens’ Police Academy
The academy enhances the partnership between the RBPD and members of the community by presenting lectures taught by police employees in an interactive hands-on way. The academy is fourteen sessions, including twelve Wednesday nights and two Saturday mornings starting on Feb. 27. Participants will learn about police training, S.W.A.T., traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, gangs and narcotics, K-9 units, police department operations and crime scene investigation.
