Baseball, softball seasons open at Redondo Union High School

Redondo Union will host its second annual softball tournament beginning Saturday as the Sea Hawks open their season and a quest for a Bay League title.

Competing in Pool A will be Millikan, Port of Los Angeles, South Torrance and West Torrance. Pool B consists of Fullerton, Jurupa Hills and Redondo. Playing in Pool C will be Harbor Teacher Prep, Mary Star, Mayfair and Long Beach Wilson.

Head Coach Jennifer Dessert’s Redondo squad begins the tournament with a 9 a.m. game on Saturday against Fullerton. The Sea Hawks face Jurupa Hills later in the day at 1 p.m.

The tournament continues Tuesday when 9th-11th seeds face off. Teams seeded 5th-8th plays on Thursday, Feb. 28 concluding with the Silver Division championship at 6 p.m.

Pool winners compete on Friday, March 1 with the Gold Division championship game held at 7:30 p.m.

Redondo returns a strong nucleus having only two seniors on last year’s squad.

Baseball

Pitting this year’s varsity team against players from the past, Redondo Union High School will host its annual Alumni Baseball Game Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. when the alumni take batting practice in hopes of avenging last year’s loss to the teenagers. Former players scheduled to play are Mike Whitcher, Cole Butler and former Stanford pitcher Jeff Stimpson. Admission is free and food is available.
