Mira Costa’s Jordan Raney heads list of local All-CIF selections

Mira Costa senior Jordan Raney was named the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Player of the Year in girls water polo, leading a list of local prep athletes honored by the CIF for their accomplishments during the 2-13-14 winter season.

Raney helped lead the Mustangs to the championship in Irvine where second-seeded Mira Costa fell to top-ranked Los Osos 7-6 in a hard-fought battle.

Raney became the second player from head coach Jon Reichardt’s water polo program to win the award this school year. Austin Norris was named Player of the Year in boys water after leading Mira Costa to the Division 3 title in the fall.

“Jordan was the Player of the Year because of her ability and consistency throughout the season,” Reichardt said. “She was a great leader for our team as well. The honor is well deserved.”

Joining Raney on the All-CIF team were teammates Kelly Giery and Katy Heatherton along with Bay League rivals Kirsten Gargas (Palos Verdes) and Roberta Martin (Peninsula).

Girls Basketball: Many South Bay schools enjoyed success on the hardwood, particularly in girls competition where West Torrance and Bishop Montgomery captured CIF crowns.

Kayla Sato was named Player of the Year and Mike Caporaso earned Coach of the Year honors after leading West to the CIF Division 2A title and an appearance in the Southern California Regional finals.

Fellow Warriors Kylie Fujioka and Hayley Tanabe also made the Division 2A All-CIF team as did North Torrance’s Tiara Scott.

Bishop Montgomery won the Division 4AA title and reached the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. Janelle Odionu was selected Player of the Year and Knight’s head coach Bridgette Reyes was named Coach of the Year. Also named to the All-CIF team were Bishop Montgomery standouts Chelsea Lidy and Christine Delapina.

In Division 2AA, Mira Costa’s Camille Mills and Redondo Union’s Nao Shito were All-CIF selections and Serra’s Chyanne Butler was honored in the Open Division.

Boys Basketball: Redondo Union’s Ian Fox earned All-CIF honors for the second consecutive year, this season making the Open Division team.

Other Open Division selections included Bishop Montgomery’s Justin Bibbins and Redondo Beach resident Thomas Welsh, a UCLA-bound center from Loyola.

Mira Costa sharpshooter Justin Strings made the Division 2AA team and Inglewood sophomore Terrell Gomez was named to the Division 1AA squad. Inglewood will join Morningside as new members of the Bay League in the 2014-15 school year with West Torrance and Leuzinger joining the Pioneer League.

Chadwick’s Kevin Doi was selected to the Division 5AA team.

Girls Soccer: Bay League powers Mira Costa and West Torrance each landed three players on the All-CIF Division 2 girls soccer team.

Sarah Chamberlain, Kimby Keever and Mandy McKeegan represented Mira Costa with West’s Chidera Akubuilo, Jenna Hernandez and Jessica Vincent also being honored.

South Torrance freshman forward Claire Grouwinkel was named Most Valuable Player and Spartan head coach Elizabeth Kitsios was named Coach of the Year after leading South to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship.

South’s Kelsie Bozart and Paige Brandt also made the All-CIF team along with Torrance’s Allison Arriola and Anika Rodriguez.

In Division 7, Vistamar’s Rocio Najera and Lindsay Salem made the All-CIF team.

Boys Soccer: Three players represented the Bay League on the All-CIF Division 1 boys soccer team. With Palos Verdes’ CJ Brill, Charlie Keating and West Torrance’s Joseph Barakat being honored.

Hawthorne’s Francisco Alvarez and Jeremiah Egujie made the Division 4 team and Vistamar’s Carter Belfort, Abu Iyob-Tessema and Tyler Salem were named to the Division 7 team.
