Track and Field: El Camino College sophomore Crystal Lizaola led the women’s track and field team to a fourth-place team finish at the State Championships at Mt. SAC. Lizaola won the 400-meter hurdles in a new personal-best 60.20 which ranks third all-time in school history and is second in the nation among community college runners. Syrea Hicks competed in three individual events at the meet earning second in the triple jump (37-10), third in the long jump (18-4 ½) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (13.95) which is the second-best time in school history.

Martial Arts: Quest Taekwondo in Redondo Beach will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The event will include demonstrations, free workouts, games and jumpers for the kids. Quest has partnered with American Martial Arts Academy and, in addition to its world-class instructors, will offer an After-School Learning Center, summer camp and summer classes. Football/Cheerleading: The Redondo Beach Youth Football and Cheer will be holding walk up registration for football and cheer on Saturday, May 31 at Dominguez Park, 200 Flagler Lane from 9-12 p.m. during Redondo Beach Little League closing day ceremonies. Registration deadline is June 15.

El Camino College announced that the 2014 football season will be played at Redondo Union High School due to the construction for building a new football stadium on campus. All ECC home football games at Redondo Union will begin at 4 p.m. on a Saturday. The Warriors will welcome Ventura College on Sept. 13 for the only home non-conference game. They have four National Central Conference home games against Citrus College (Sept. 27), Cerritos College (Oct. 11), LA Harbor College (Oct. 25) and Mt. SAC (Nov. 8).

Volleyball: The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) will be holding its Southern Pacific Championships on Saturday, May 31 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Competition includes Boys 14/12 and Girls 18/16/14/12/10 divisions. For more information, visit aaubeach.org or email spvcvolleyball@hotmail.com.

Beach volleyball classes are being offered for beginner, intermediate and advanced players throughout the summer on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The six-session class is held Thursdays (6:15-8 p.m.) beginning June 12. Main Instructor is Bill Sigler, a former AAA rated player and owner of the nation’s top volleyball apparel company Smack Sportswear, who has been teaching beach and indoor volleyball for over 18 years. The 4 on 4 Co-ed Beach Volleyball League begins Tuesday, July 1. Games will be north of the Hermosa Beach Pier from 6:15-8 p.m. Post league refreshments at Sharkeez with Bud Light, Red Bull, Barefoot, Deep Eddy, Grey Goose, and “Fadorade” specials. All incoming Mira Costa freshman and transfer students are invited to attend the girls volleyball tryouts on Monday and Tuesday,, July 7-8 in the afternoon/evening (exact time/location TBA). A select number of freshman/incoming students will be invited to continue their tryout on July 9- 10. Rosters will be announced the evening of July 10. Kickball: An adult co-ed Kickball on the Beach League begins Wednesday, May 28 in Hermosa Beach. Teams require a minimum of four girls with total of ten players. Basketball: Registration is ongoing for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball (HBYB) Summer League. Open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grades, the league consists of two one-hour games per week beginning on Monday, July 7 and running through Thursday, July 31. All registration will be done on-line at hbyb.net. Cost is $140 per player. A limited number of partial or full scholarships are available for families in need. Girls ages 8-14 can learn the fundamentals of basketball while improving their skill level at the ProSkills Basketball Clinic held every Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Athletic Club, 2250 Park Place in El Segundo. The head coach is former Mira Costa and UC Fullerton standout Megan Richardson who led the Mustangs to CIF and State finals and was a four-time All-Big West player and the third highest scorer in UC Fullerton history. Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 10th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. For more information, visit rbtriathlon.com.
