Hermosa Beach police have made an arrest in a shooting that left one man injured in a North Hermosa neighborhood last month. Bruce Jackson, a 25-year-old Los Angeles resident, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, said HBPD Sgt. Robert Higgins. Jackson was arrested near his Los Angeles home, and is being held at the Hermosa Beach Jail in lieu of $1,050,000 bail.

The shooting took place on the afternoon of March 24 at the 2700 block of El Oeste Drive, near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Gould Avenue. Officers responded to calls of shots fired, but found no one at the scene when they arrived. The victim, a male Hawthorne resident in his 20s, arrived by himself at an area emergency room about half an hour later. At the time, police said that it is considered suspicious when someone arrives at an emergency room with a gunshot wound unaccompanied by police or first responders, and that medical personnel routinely notify police departments in the area in such situations.

Following the shooting, Hermosa police said they were seeking two men in the case, but with Jackson’s arrest are no longer pursuing other suspects. According to an HBPD statement, the gun allegedly used in the shooting was recovered from Jackson’s car.

“The other person was just a person of interest and we’re not seeking him anymore. This is the suspect we believe was the shooter,” Higgins said.

The shooting took place in an alley separating El Oeste from Ocean Plaza, a commercial center fronting Pacific Coast Hwy. Residents who were at home at the time the shooting occurred said that they heard what sounded like a car backfiring, and estimated that there were two to four shots.

The case remains under investigation, but Higgins said it is believed that the shooting stemmed from a business dispute over marijuana. The victim has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Jackson has no prior convictions in California. He is due to appear at the Torrance Courthouse Thursday morning.
