Hennessey’s Paddleboard Series director Tim Ritter was having dinner at Zazou in Riviera Village Friday night when he ran into fashion/sports photographer Alan Clift. The following morning Ritter was to help coordinate the South Bay Dozen  lifeguard competition at Torrance Beach and convinced Clift to photograph the event. Clift had never photographed a lifeguard competition, but said he found it inspiring. It’s apparent why in his striking photos.

The South Bay Dozen is an annual waterman/waterwoman’s event that is open to the public, but whose participants are primarily Los Angles County lifeguard and their kids.

Competitors can participate in any or all of 12 events, which include paddleboard, swimming, surf ski and dory races. The event benefits the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation. The JMMF offers ocean therapy to kids and military veterans. For more about the Jimmy Miller Foundation visit JimmyMillerFoundation.org. ER
