Beach Cities Sports: Baseball, running, surfing and more

 

Registration is ongoing for the 35th edition of the Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K/5K Run/Walk.

Baseball: Redondo Sunset Baseball and Softball is holding signups for the 2013 season at redondosunset.com. Walk-up registration will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alta Vista Park.

Registration for Hermosa Beach Little League is scheduled to close on Jan. 5, 2013 for the Spring 2013 season.  Open to boys and girls between the ages of 4-14, the league consists of multiple divisions of t-ball, baseball, and softball.  Opening Day is March 2. Registration is ongoing for Redondo Beach Little League. Open to residents of the City of Redondo Beach between the ages of 4 and 14, the league consists of eight divisions and will begin play on March 2, 2013. Online registration is available at RedondoLittleLeague.com.

Running: The 3rd Annual Operation Jack Marathon will be held Wednesday, Dec. 26. The full and half marathon both start and end at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey. In 2010, Sam Felsenfeld ran 61 marathons for his son Jack, who has Autism. Sam worked with local runners and volunteers to produce a marathon, his 61st race that year, and since that time the event has grown to include hundreds of athletes fighting for the same cause. In two short years, these athletes have raised more than $55,000 for Autism charities. The Operation Jack Foundation and Train 4 Autism are working to support families affected by this neurological disorder. For more information, visit operationjack.org/marathon.

Registration is open for the 35th Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K Walk/Run to be held Feb. 3. Entry fees are $30 for the 10K, 5K and Baby Buggy races until Dec. 31 (add $5 until Feb. 2). A combo package for the 10K and 5K for $50 will be available starting Jan. 1, 2013. Nearly 10,000 people attend the annual event which includes a costume contest and custom awards for the top three finishers in each category. Michelob Ultra will host a Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 3 from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. as well as the post-race hospitality area. The Party Meets the Pavement at the 4th Annual Allstate Life Insurance Los Angeles 13.1 Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. The half marathon begins on the Venice Boardwalk and ends in Playa Del Rey. Live entertainment, food and refreshments including the Michelob Ultra beer garden will highlight the festivities. Runners will also be able to donate the shoes off their feet through a special partnership with Allstate and Give Your Sole, which provides worn athletic shoes for those in need. The 5K will begin 15 minutes after the start of the marathon. Entry fees are $95 (half marathon) and $35 (5K) through Jan. 12. For more information, visit 131LosAngeles.com.

Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders Club has announced the schedule for its 2012-13 South Bay Surf Series. Open to non-club members, the contests are slated for this Saturday at the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier; Saturday, Jan. 5 at 26th St., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, Feb. 2 at El Porto; Saturday, Mar. 9 at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach; Saturday, April 13 at El Porto and Saturday, May 11 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Track and Field: Former All-American and longtime UCLA coach Anthony Curran has started a youth track-and-field program for kids ages 10-14.
