Mira Costa girls take third in La Habra basketball tournament

Mira Costa’s girls basketball team found its winning ways after a slow start, taking third place in the La Habra Tournament.

Mira Costa began tournament action with a 39-31 win over Wilson (Hacienda Heights). Camille Mills returned to the starting lineup from ankle and knee injuries and scored a team-high nine points for the Mustangs. Haley Tojo added seven points and Shannon Savino scored six points in the win.

After a loss to Thousand Oaks, Mira Costa defeated La Mirada 58-45 to wrap up pool play. Mills scored a team-high 14 points and Keilani Ikehara added 10 points for the Mustangs.

In the third-place game, Mira Costa throttled Capistrano Valley 70-35 behind Mills’ 18-point performance. Shaylyn Austin recorded 14 points and Rachel Humphrey added 10 points for the Mustangs.

Long Beach Millikan defeated Serra 62-57 to win the Battle at the Beach tournament at Redondo Union High School.

Host Redondo fell to JSerra 66-49 in the fifth-place game. Inara Nyingifa recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds while earning all-tournament honors.

The Sea Hawks began the tournament defeating Santa Monica 64-20. Nyingifa led Redondo with 21 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and three steals. Bella Hall added 11 points, Taylor Smith scored eight points and Micaela Enriquez had seven points five rebounds and three assists.

In the quarterfinals, Redondo fell to a talented Serra team 67-47 despite Nyingifa’s 23-point, nine-rebound performance. Tori Lee scored six points and Enriquez and Kourtney Noa each scored five points for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo defeated Long Beach Wilson 57-50 in overtime to reach the fifth-place game. Nyingifa scored 28 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals to lead the Sea Hawks.

Enriquez added 11, 10 assists and three steals and Hall recorded 23 rebounds in the win.
