Costa, Redondo prepare to meet for second time on turf, hardwood

The boys and girls basketball and soccer teams from Mira Costa and Redondo Union meet for the second time in Bay League competition Tuesday in crucial games that hold playoff implications.

Following are recaps of how the rival teams are doing as they prepare for the second round of league play.

Boys Basketball

In a game between Bay League unbeatens, Redondo moved into first place all alone after defeating Leuzinger 59-48 on the road Tuesday.

Derek Biale scored 28 points, including seven trifectas, Ian Fox added 11 points, Sebastian Lindner recorded seven points and 11 rebounds, Jeremiah Headley added six points and five rebounds and Darrien Touchstone had six rebounds in the win.

Redondo (13-8, 5-0) is ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A while Leuzinger (16-5, 4-1) is ranked No. 1 in Division 3AA.

On Friday, host Redondo defeated Palos Verdes 71-38. Biale scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Chris Henderson recorded 11 points and seven rebounds for the Sea Hawks.

Earlier last week, Redondo beat West 54-47. Biale scored 13 points and Touchstone recorded 11 points and six rebounds.

Redondo hosts Peninsula (No. 12, Div. 2AA) Friday and Mira Costa (No. 5, Div. 2AA) next Thursday

Mira Costa (14-7, 3-2) outlasted host Palos Verdes (7-14, 0-5) 62-53 Monday. Cole Feaster, Kevin Kim and Oliver Mausner each scored 13 points and Justin Strings added 10 points for the Mustangs. Feaster also had seven assists.

Mira Costa evened its league record at 2-2 Friday with a 57-49 road win over Peninsula. Strings scored 16 points and Feaster recorded 15 points and seven assists for the Mustangs.

Despite holding a nine-point halftime lead, Mira Costa dropped its home game against Leuzinger last week. Feaster recorded 20 points and had eight assists and Ryan Kassef posted 13 points and seven rebounds against the Olympians.

Mira Costa host West Friday before traveling to take on rival Redondo on Tuesday.

Boys basketball games are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. following the girls’ contests that begin at 6 p.m.

Girls Basketball

Mira Costa (14-8, 4-1) remained tied for first place in the Bay League with West (16-7, 4-1) after the Mustangs defeated Palos Verdes (11-12, 1-4) 41-28 Tuesday.

Camille Mills and Shaylyn Austin scored 10 points apiece and Haley Tojo added nine points for Mira Costa which is ranked No. 13 in Division 2AA. West is ranked No. 6 in Division 2A.

The Mustangs had moved into a first-place tie with Peninsula after a 50-44 road win over the Panthers on Friday.

Austin recorded 14 points and four steals; Mills had 10 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and three blocks; Tojo scored eight points and Rachel Humphrey added seven points and nine rebounds.

Mira Costa was coming off a 63-18 rout over visiting Leuzinger where Mills scored 16 points; Tojo added 12 points and Austin recorded 10 points.

Mira Costa will host West in a battle for league supremacy on Friday before traveling to Redondo on Tuesday.

Redondo (12-9, 3-2) throttled host Leuzinger 69-16 Tuesday behind Tori Lee’s 21-point performance.

Inara Nyingifa recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, Tatiana Maimot added eight points and nine rebounds, Bella Hall scored eight points and Amiete Nyingifa added seven points in her first game this season after suffering an injury.

The Sea Hawks are currently ranked No. 7 in Division 2A and had little difficulty defeating visiting Palos Verdes (No. 11, Div. 3AA) 60-31 Friday. Inara Nyingifa recorded 14 points, five steals and four rebounds and Leann Maanum added 11 points for the Sea Hawks.

Earlier last week, Redondo posted its first league victory with a 46-41 win over visiting West. Inara Nyingifa recorded 29 points and 11 rebounds. Hall added seven points and 11 rebounds. The Sea Hawk defense forced the Warriors to turn the ball over 18 times.

The Sea Hawks host Peninsula Friday. Redondo will play at Bishop Amat (No. 1, Div. 1A) Saturday in a tough non-league battle before returning to Bay League action Tuesday against Mira Costa

Boys Soccer

Redondo (11-6-4, 1-2-2), which has faced injury problems, suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at Leuzinger Tuesday after scoring an emotional victory with a 0-0 tie against league-leading Palos Verdes on Friday.

Colin Jackson, Enzo Mattuci and Giovani Partida kept pressure on Palos Verdes and goalkeeper Griffin Thomas recorded five saves for the Sea Hawks.

Palos Verdes (16-2-2, 4-0-1) is ranked No. 4 in Division 1 while Leuzinger (14-3-4, 3-2) is ranked No. 10 in the same division.

Earlier last week, Redondo recorded a 2-0 home shutout against West. The Sea Hawks host Peninsula Friday and Mira Costa on Tuesday.

Mira Costa (6-7-1, 1-3-1) was shutout 6-0 at Palos Verdes Tuesday after defeating Peninsula 3-2 in double overtime on Friday.

Grant Southwood scored in the second overtime to give the Mustangs the win. Chase Sandera had a goal and an assist, and Travis Bradford had a goal for Mira Costa.

Earlier in the week, Mira Costa lost to visiting Leuzinger 5-2. Southwood scored both goals for the Mustangs who will host West Friday before traveling to Redondo on Tuesday.

Boys and girls Bay League soccer games are slated to begin at 3 p.m.

Girls Soccer

Mira Costa (8-2-3, 3-1-1) played to a scoreless tie with visiting Palos Verdes on Tuesday.

The Mustangs were coming off key victory Friday when goalkeeper Nonie Frishette played a stellar game while shutting out visiting Peninsula 1-0 that moved the Mustangs into a first-place tie with Peninsula.

McKenna Doyle scored the game’s lone goal in the 10th minute for Mira Costa which had posted a 5-0 win at Leuzinger earlier in the week.

Doyle scored three goals and Rachael Oster added two more for the Mustangs against the Olympians.

Mira Costa is ranked No. 7 in Division 2 and will play at West Friday before hosting rival Redondo Tuesday.

Redondo remained in the playoff hunt with a 6-0 victory over visiting Leuzinger Tuesday.

Sierra Kaufman scored two goals to lead the Sea Hawks. Anevay Heihle, Hope Ibarra, Brittany Oldham and Shannon Simon each scored one goal in the win.

Redondo knocked off Palos Verdes 4-0 Friday. Simon and Heihle each scored two goals for Redondo while Kaufman recorded 15 saves in goal.

Earlier in the week, Redondo beat West 1-0 on Tonya Gonzalez’s goal in the final minute. Kauffman recorded nine saves for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo faces two tough road games against Peninsula Friday and at Mira Costa on Tuesday.

Girls Water Polo

Mira Costa (10-4, 3-1) held onto a 4-0 halftime lead to defeat host Redondo 4-2 Monday.

Hannah Mansour and Bridgette Schneider each recorded a goal and an assist while Sarah Logan recorded 11 saves for the Sea Hawks.

Mira Costa previously defeated host Peninsula 14-8 behind Jordan Raney’s six-goal performance. Kaylee Brownsberger, Kelly Giery and Emily Misltead each scored two goals for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa hosts Palos Verdes today at 3 p.m. in a critical Bay League showdown. Mira Costa is ranked No. 4 in Division 3 while Palos Verdes holds down the No. 3 spot.

Last weekend, Redondo competed in the TYR Cup in El Dorado. In a 6-5 win over Mission, Brida Brando and Madison East scored two goals apiece and Bridgette Brando and Sarah Curran each scored once.

In a 9-5 loss to Esperanza, Bridgette Schneider led Redondo with three goals and Easy and Lexi Kleen each scored once. Goalkeeper Sarah Logan recorded 19 saves in the two games.

Redondo (10-12) plays at Peninsula (No 9, Div. 3) Monday in a 3 p.m. contest.

Wrestling

Mira Costa (4-1, 2-1) defeated Redondo 57-21. Michael Cervantes (122 lbs.), Lars Cameron (108 lbs.), Will Goodwin (197 lbs.), Mustafa Hafezzada (134 lbs.), Ben Kolodny (222 lbs.), Kelly McNamee (115 lbs.), Kit Murphy (128 lbs.) and Adrian Navarro (162 lbs.) recorded pins for the Mustangs.

The Bay League finals will be held Saturday, Feb. 2.
