Mira Costa to host annual Mustang Relays

Many of Southern California’s top high school track and field athletes will showcase their talents Saturday when Mira Costa High School hosts the Mustang Relays sponsored by Skechers Performance Division.
Action takes place from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and will feature boys and girls varsity and freshman/sophomore teams from 18 schools competing in a variety of distance, hurdle and field events. There will also be a Coaches 4×100 relay.
Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for Senior Citizens and $3 for students with ID and children under 12. Programs and merchandise will be available to purchase along with hot-food vendors, Jamba Juice, Kettle Korn and Shaved Ice.
Mira Costa will use the event as a final tune-up before Spring Break and three consecutive Bay League meets. The Mustang’s boys team defeated Palos Verdes 120-16 in its Bay League opener while the girls team was victorious 93-43.
Mira Costa split its team last weekend with its distance runners competing in the Adidas Azusa Meet of Champions while other athletes took part of the Cal Relays at Cerritos College.

Juliana Loiola won the girls 100 hurdles with a time of 16.53. Shante Robinson placed third int he 330 hurdles (45.64), the girls 4×400 relay team of Myan Elrington, Emily Jones, Loiola and Robinson finished third at 4:14.49 and P.J. Onuscomich placed third in the boys 110 hurdles with a mark of 16.83.
Rival Redondo Union also sent its distance teams to Azusa with other team members competing at the Maurice Greene Invitational at Oaks Christian High School.
At Azusa Pacific College, Amber Gor (2:11.86) and Anevay Hiehle (2:15.02) took first and second in the girls 800 meters and Dustin Herold (1:54.40) placed second in the boys 800.
At the Maurice Greene Invitational, Redondo girls swept the pole vault competition with Sara Curra (11-3), Kaitlin Heri (10-3) and Emma Parkinson (9-9) taking the top three spots.
Redondo’s girls 4×100 relay team finished second with a time of 44.24 and Ryan Keliher placed third in the boys pole vault with a mark of 13-3.
The Sea Hawks looked good at the Redondo Nike Track Festival, particularly during the Distance Carnival on the first day of competition.
Both boys and girls 4×800 relay teams set meet records with times among the fastest in the nation this season.
Nick Wells, Sergio Rodriguez, Waseem Radi and Dustin Herold held off Loyola to win in 7 minutes, 47.93 seconds.

Anevay Hiehle, Breya Wynne, Thalia Silva and Amber Gore won the girls relay in 9:25.79 seconds. Redondo’s girls distance medley team finished second with a time of 12:22.5.
Carlos Suarez set a personal record of 9:24 by placing third in the 3,200.
Mira Costa finished fifth in the girls 4×800 and fourth in the distance medley.
The second day of competition was highlighted by Redondo freshman pole vaulter Kaitin Heri who set a school record of 12 feet.
Amber Gore won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:14.15, the third fastest time in the nation this year. Hiehle (2:17.02) and Wynne (2:19.90) placed second and fifth, respectively.
In the boys 800, Redondo’s Sergio Rodriguez (1:56.17) and Dustin Herold (1:56.19) finished second and third.
