Mira Costa goes pink on the diamond

Mira Costa baseball players and cheerleaders have joined forces to host “Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer,” an inaugural event that will help raise awareness and research funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Each October, the cheerleading program partners with the Mustang football team during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The girls continue to show their support when they head the diamond for the Mustang’s baseball game against Bay League rival Leuzinger on Friday, April 25 at 3:15 p.m.
The event has special meaning for Mira Costa head coach Cassidy Olson, whose mother Lynn is a breast cancer survivor. Lynn, who has been cancer-free for three years, will travel from Tiburon to throw out the ceremonial first ball.
“It’s a scary thing when someone close to you has breast cancer,” Cassidy said. “It’s then when you find out how many people you know have family, friends or know someone who have had breast cancer.”

MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Mike Matthews and Mira Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale are not only planning to attend, but will also promote the event through school and district channels to encourage awareness. Past and present members of the Manhattan Beach City Council also plan to attend.
Jamba Juice of Hermosa Beach will be on hand selling pink smoothies, with the large portion of the proceeds going to Komen for the Cure. Koman has adopted pink as its signature color.
Mira Costa Cheer will sell custom “Putting a Cap on Cancer” pink baseball caps for $20 and the varsity baseball players will play the game with customized Louisville Slugger pink bats.
All of the players on the Mira Costa varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph teams will sign one of the bats for their respective team, and then Mira Costa Baseball will auction them off to the highest bidder.
All proceeds from sales and auctions will go to breast cancer awareness and research.
