Memorial service

for ER cartoonist

Keith Robinson

A memorial service for longtime “Easy Reader” cartoonist and lifelong Manhattan Beach resident Keith Robinson will be held Sunday at 3 p.m.  at the Manhattan Beach Community Church.  Robinson began contributing his “Making It at the Beach” cartoon to “Easy Reader” in 1985, after winning the “Easy Reader” anniversary cartooning contest with a spoof on the children’s game Chutes and Ladders. The first square read “Move out of parents’ house.” The final square read  “Buy house on The Strand — You win.” Squares along the way included “Membership in Manhattan Country Club — 40 points” and “Park Porsche at Pancho’s. Realize valet was your student body president at Costa — 20 points.”

Robinson worked at Mattel on Intellivision, one of the first commercially successful electronic console games. He subsequently acquired rights to the game and reissued it, capitalizing on the nostalgia fad for early electronic games. The Manhattan Beach Community Church is located at 303 S Peck Ave, Manhattan Beach.
