Manhattan Beach McCaverty Clan survives another St. Patrick’s Day
by Christi McCaverty
The McCaverty clan celebrated its Ninth Annual St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl aboard an open roof, double-decker bus on Holy St. Patrick’s Day. The red double decker left downtown Manhattan Beach with 42 people on board at 9 a.m., provisioned with coolers of Guinness and Kilkenny and Cathy Lugo’s famous soda bread. The bus elicited cheers from envious early revelers at Starbucks and Hennessey’s.
Leprechaun Jimmy McCaverty led the clan in his sherbet green suit and top hat. He would be the subject of many tourists’ photos throughout the day.
The bus followed the beach route to Finn McCool’s in Santa Monica for an Irish breakfast and Irish coffees. Then the big red bus headed down Pico and up to Wilshire into the heart of LA while everyone sang “We Love LA.”
The next stop was Casey’s Irish Pub’s annual street fair. The downtown streets were blocked off for their large beer garden. A generous number of Casey’s pickle backs were downed, followed by chasers of green beer. There was Irish dancing in the sun. Then it was time to reboard the bus and head to Culver City’s Joxer Daly’s for more Irish music, Irish jigs and corned beef and cabbage. From there, it was just a hop and a skip back to Hennessey’s Tavern in Manhattan Beach for a nightcap. ER
