Local baseball teams enjoy success in summer All-Star tournaments

Local baseball teams have excelled during All-Star tournaments this summer, highlighted by El Segundo’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth team that will compete in the World Series in Williston, North Dakota Aug. 17-24.

Pool play has Pacific Southwest representative El Segundo facing New England (Sat., Aug. 17), Southwest (Sun. Aug. 18), Pacific Northwest (Mon. Aug. 19) and the North Dakota state champion (Wed. Aug. 21). Action in the single elimination bracket begins Thursday, Aug. 22.

El Segundo advanced to the World Series after winning the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament in Vernal, Utah with a 10-9 win over Hawaii and a 13-3 rout over Tri-Valley in a five-inning game.

El Segundo completed pool play with a 3-0 record defeating Ker-West of Central California 5-2, Yuma, Arizona 15-3 and Southern Utah 10-0.

Manhattan Beach falls short

Hawaii literally walked away with the District 23 Regional Tournament championship in Ontario when the team from Pearl City scored the winning run on four straight walks in the 8th inning to defeat the Manhattan Beach Little League Senior All-Stars 4-3.

Hawaii advanced to the World Series in Bangor, Maine Aug. 11-17. Manhattan Beach was seeking its first World Series appearance since 2010 when the South Bay boys reached the semifinals.

Riding on the arms of a strong pitching staff, the Manhattan Beach Senior League All-Stars (ages 15-16 years) clinched the California Sectional Division 4 championship with a 4-2 win over Lennox.

Hosting the Sub-Division 3 tournament, Manhattan Beach defeated Sunset Little League of Oxnard 12-4 to claim the championship and advanced to the Southern California Divisional series at Point Loma High School where the team beat Spring Valley 1-0 and 10-2 in the best-two-out-of-three series.

The win put Manhattan Beach in the Regionals where eight teams faced each other with the top two teams playing for the title with the winner reaching the World Series.

Manhattan Beach opened pool play with a 17-0 rout of Oregon, defeated Northern California 3-1 and Arizona 8-2 before suffering its first loss of the tournament, a 14-4 shellacking by Hawaii.

The team rebounded to throttle host Chino National Little League 11-1 before edging a tough Washington team 4-.2 Manhattan Beach concluded pool play with a 6-1 record after routing Montana 13-2 advancing to the championship game against Hawaii.

Team members included Reese Alexiades, Zack Chan, Brett Davis, Trevor Franklin, Cooper Gallion, Blake Hammerstein, Luke McCauley, Jackson Michalski, Logan Pollack, Will Proctor, Adam Reinart, Rhett Rudnicki, Hunter Tiedemann, Max Tulio, Robert White, Manager Carlos Rojas and coaches Turner Conrad and Russell Kontos.

 

Redondo makes history

After capturing the District 36 championship, the Redondo Beach Little League 10-11-year-old All-Star team won the California Section 4 championship with an 8-2 win over Westchester.

The team advanced to the State Division tournament in Lancaster where it finished fifth in the state after losing to eventual champion Encino.

The finish was the best for a Redondo Beach Little League team. Members of the squad included Ryan Inana, Christopher Damone, Jace Sullivan, Theo Forshey, Christian Dicochea, Brett McCauley, Collin Wong, Robbie Duchesne, Isaiah “Z” Flores, Kenji Mushaney, Blake Fanthorpe, Manager-Jeff Forshey and Coaches Rob Damone and Neil Sullivan.
