Hermosa Beach Lawn Bowling club lights up the night

The days may run long in the summer, but when the night does arrive, the Hermosa Beach Lawn Bowling Club will be prepared. The club celebrates its 80th birthday this year with the addition of flood lights. Players will be able to lawn bowl into the evening hours for the first time in the club’s history. Club President George Renshaw is hopeful that the change will expand the club’s member roster by bringing in those who have been unable to make it in the past because of work.
The game, which has been called a thinking man’s bocce ball, involves rolling elliptical “lawn bowls” across the green toward a painted jack. Renshaw said that a green can be found in the back of almost every pub in his native Manchester.
But locally, it’s just one more thing that makes Hermosa unique.
