Mira Costa’s girls opened Friday’s basketball action against rival Redondo Union with a thrilling 59-57 win over the visiting Sea Hawks.

With 10 seconds left, Keilani Ikehara was fouled on a successful baseline shot and proceeded to make the free throw, giving the Mustangs the much needed win.

Coach Miranda Biteler’s unranked Mira Costa squad improved its season record to 9-8 while evening its league record at 1-1. Redondo, ranked No. 12 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A, dropped to 0-2.

Ikehara scored a team-high 19 points for Mira Costa, which battled back from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit. Camille Mills added 16 points and Shaylyn Austin recorded 10 points for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa hosts Leuzinger Tuesday and Palos Verdes (No. 9, Div. 3AA) Friday before traveling to Peninsula on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Bay League games are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Redondo (9-9) ended its three-game losing streak Saturday with a 60-41 home win over Marlborough in a non-league game. Inara Nyingifa recorded a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds and Micaela Enriquez added 17 points and four rebounds for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo returns to league action Tuesday when West (No. 3, Div. 2A) invades Sea Hawk Pavilion.

Coach Marcel Enriquez’s squad hosts Palos Verdes Friday before traveling to Leuzinger on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

In the nightcap, Redondo’s boys prevented a sweep on the hardwood with a 57-47 win over Mira Costa, the fourth ranked team in Division 2AA.

Point guard Ian Fox led Redondo with 18 points and Derek Biale added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Sea Hawks who improved their season record to 9-9 under first-year head coach Reggie Morris. Redondo remained tied for first in the Bay League with Leuzinger at 2-0.

Oliver Mausner led Mira Costa (1-1) with 10 points, Ryan Kaseff recorded nine points and 10 rebounds and Justin Strings added eight points and nine rebounds.

Redondo is ranked No. 8 in Division 2A and hosts West (No. 10, Div. 3A) Tuesday and Palos Verdes Friday. The Sea Hawks compete in the Martin Luther King Showdown on Monday before returning to Bay League competition Tuesday, Jan. 22 with a road game at Leuzinger to determine first place. The Olympians are ranked No. 2 in Division 3AA.

League games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Jeff Amaral’s Mira Costa team quickly rebounded from its loss to Redondo by throttling El Segundo 54-38 in a non-league game Saturday.

Strings scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Mausner added 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Cole Feaster contributed 12 points and five assists.

Mira Costa (12-6) hosts Leuzinger in a critical game Tuesday. Palos Verdes comes to Fisher Gym Friday before the Mustangs’ road game at Peninsula (No. 8, Div. 2A) on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
