Dancing with the Stars’ and Hermosa Beach resident Anna Trebunskaya taught some dance moves to cancer survivors  and supporters at her mother’s dance studio on Aviation Boulevard Friday morning.

More than 40 women participated in the “Bust a Move” dance event put on by the Torrance Memorial Medical Center as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Trebunskaya, 31, said she has lost a close friend who was in her early thirties to breast cancer.

“It’s important for people who are going through recovery to come out here and enjoy themselves and just dance with each other,” Trebunskaya said.

Nikki Hernandez of Redondo Beach, who is battling breast cancer, said the dance session is a lot of fun.

“Dancing and just being around the other women is great,” Hernandez said.

Dancing has been shown to be an effective form of therapy for cancer patients, improving quality of life and self-esteem, which boosts immunity. Besides bringing the ladies together for free dance lessons, the social event also is meant to bring attention to the importance of early detection and screening mammograms, said Ann O’Brien, director of public relations for Torrance Memorial.

This is the second year Irina and Anna Trebunskaya have hosted the dance event with Torrance Memorial at the You Can Dance Studio. The idea originated over lunch between members of the hospital’s public relations team, said Torrance Memorial Public Relations Manager Colleen Farrell. Linda Russell of Hermosa Beach, a member of the dance studio and medical staff coordinator at Torrance Memorial, approached Irina Trebunskaya with the idea for the fun dance session.

“It was a perfect fit,” said Irina Trebunskaya.
