Beach Cities Sports: Beach tennis, volleyball and more
Volleyball: Hayley Lawson-Blanchard began her tenure as Mira Costa’s head girls volleyball coach on the right note as the Mustangs finished second at the Ann Kang Invitational tournament in Honolulu, HI. Mira Costa went 6-0 in the first two days of competition before losing to perennial power Punahou 25-19, 25-19 on Saturday. In the semifinals, the Mustangs defeated CIF-SS Division 1AA adversary Lakewood 25-19, 25-23 to advance to the championship match where Mira Costa fell to Punahou 27-25, 27-25.
The CBVA will be holding tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Men’s and Women’s AA divisions will compete on Saturday. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) concludes its beach volleyball season with the Southern Pacific Coed Championships to be held Sunday, Aug. 24 at Dockweiler State Beach. Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a ¼ mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run. A 1-hour swim clinic will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. at 10th Street in Hermosa Beach. Fees are $115 (individual) and $180 (relay). Add $10 after Aug. 31.
